Shauna

“Hey, is everything okay over there? You are the talk of every television station. Reporters and police are all around your house,” Shauna said, as she watched television in disbelief.

“Yeah, I’m cool, I guess. I thought you were going to come over here, and we were going to have a cook-out?” Solomon asked.

“I was, but under the circumstances, I don’t think it’s a good idea. The kids may not be able to handle all of that,” Shauna told him.

“You’re right. I guess I’m a hostage in my own house.”

“Why don’t you pack a bag and come over here with us? Bring some of Madison’s things and we can celebrate over here, at least until things settle down. I mean, unless you were going to go somewhere else. You know what, forget it…”

“Shauna, calm down. If you’re thinking I’m seeing someone I’m not. I would love to take you up on your offer. It’s just. I don’t know how to say this without seeming vulnerable.”

“Just say it,” Shauna said.

“I’m feeling something for you, and I don’t want to be the one to get hurt if you and Jeremiah get serious.”

“Oh, you’re real funny. That dude tolerates me, but he can’t stand me, and I can’t stand him.”

“It didn’t seem like that when I saw you all in the café together. You guys seemed real cozy sharing dessert and then when I came to the table he killed a thousand times with his eyes.”

“He’s my trainer, that’s it, but what’s it to you? I’m not trying to see anyone. My life is such a mess. I gotta get Shauna together.”

“Last time I looked, Shauna was looking well put together,” Solomon said flirtingly.

“Really? Look, you ain’t gotta gas my head up. I said it’s cool for you to stay over here if you need a place to crash.”

“You know me well enough to know when I’m blowing smoke, and that ain’t smoke. I’ll see you in a few minutes,” he said before hanging up.

I’m glad he finally hung up. Did I hear him right? He’s digging me. Oh, snap. I’m digging him too, but I can’t get hurt by him again. Once bitten. Twice shy.

The ringing of her cell phone drew her out of her trance. City of Gary came across the caller ID. Damien, calling to wish me a Happy Fourth of July. Call me and tell me about some child support. Call me and tell me when you’re gonna pay me the money you owe me, punk. I could give less than a damn about a holiday. Independence Day. I could be a whole lot more independent if I had my money. I should let it ring and go to voicemail, but I wanna hear what this sorry bastard has to say for himself.

“Hello,” Shauna answered unenthusiastically.

“Yes, is this Shauna Buchanan, the daughter of the late Judge Buchanan?” The woman on the other end of the telephone asked.

“Who is this?” Shauna demanded.

“This is Marisol Waters. I clerked at your father’s office years ago.
